Do I think that girls need more games that are just girl-oriented?. That depends.
I find that girl gamers in general apreciate games just as they are, they tend to like and dislike genres, storylines, combat systems, control handling, all that, just as boys do; some like gore and violence and some don't, just as some guys like gore and violence and some don't.
I hear complaints about how objectified female characters are in videogames, to be countered inmediately by other girls (or guys) that point how objectified male characters are, as well.
Nah, under a consumer point of view, games in general are fine as they are, if I like it, I'll play it, if I don't I won't ask for it to be redone to better tune into my feminine capabilities.
However, under a videogame executive point of view, I might think of ways to make the girls the 50% of that gaming pie, and I actually think that the effort is being made as we speak, after all, we might want just about everyone buying those consoles and those games, not just males on the 12-30 year old gap, but (all) girls and older adults, as well, yes?.
Think of how games like The Godfather are aimed at a more mature audience, for example, I see games that might be more oriented to inherently feminine sensitivities (no, I won't mention them).
This doesn't mean that videogame makers are thinking of adding ponies and pastel colors to the games, please!, but, some subtle changes, too subtle for the gamer girls to detect them and instantly refuse playing them because they are "too girly", but, strong enough to attract a market of girls that think that games are just for boys.
The not so visible changes that the maker of the thread speaks of, might be considered to atract girls from the get go, not those that have already seen videogames and decided that gaming isn't for them, but, the young crop, those that are too young to absorb the common (videogames are a boy's thing) concept yet.
One interesting thing I remember is that when my niece and nephew were little, my niece got games like "The Little Mermaid" and "My Little Pony", that she barely touched, being more interested in hording coins in Super Mario Bros. and passing those wicked Megaman levels, never too into trying to show that she was "one of the guys" and not a gamer in the least now, in her adulthood, but, never too interested in the girly games, simply because, well, they were to easy and boring.
