Let me take you on a magical journey to a time called 1987. There existed this tiny software company, we know of them today as Square Enix.
Bankrupcy seemed imminent, finances were draining, hope was being lost, but one man; Hironobu Sakaguchi, had set out on a last ditch effort for the company. Thinking, like everyone else, it would be little Squaresoft's last project, it was entitled Final Fantasy.
The graphics by today's standards were primitive, the gameplay by today's standards was sub-par, but the music, produced by Nobuo Uematsu, to this day stands strong as some of the greatest composed peices of the modern era. But in 1987 there was no such thing as 3D, there was barely even a second dimension.
But this title paved the way for many, MANY more fantastic games. This site wouldn't exist had it not been for Hironobu Sakaguchi, I wouldn't even be here talking to you had it not been for the game you are dissing so horrendously.
And for the record, Dawn of Souls isn't NEARLY the same experience as playing the original, so before you judge, at least ROM the original 2.
Edits and Revisions:
You want relevance to modern day Final Fantasys?
- The Music. The opening prelude composed back in 1987 has been in nearly every FF game to date, or a variation thereof.
- The Fanfare, composed for the very same game, has, in some form, been in every Final Fantasy.
- Save for Final Fantasy X, the experience system, the level up system, the turn-based battle system, and the emphasis on dungeon exploring has been reincorporated every time.
And, how can you not relate to the characters of FF2? How would you feel if you get your ass handed to you by a bunch of dark knights, nearly die, are saved by a group of rebels, and awake to find one of your best freinds missing?
The characters of Final Fantasy 1 can even be related to, at least, to me, via my imagination.
I always name my White Mage (if I'm using one) after a friend of mine I feel like dissing on, unless it's a girl I'm naming it after. On my current ROM my WHM is named Will, after my friend William. I relate, in one way or another, my friends to what the job I'm naming them for stands for, and as such I feel as if me and 3 of my good buddies are questing to save the world from evil.
It takes imagination, but kids these days don't know that. I'm reminded of Back to the Future II, the part where Marty is saving his kid from robbing the bank and he teaches these kids how to play an old arcade game from the 80s, and they say "You have to use your hands!?" and walk away laughing.
The day that happens, and I'm sure it actually will some day, will be a sad sad day for video games.
